Home » Kazakhstan to create maritime logistics cluster
Kazakhstan is launching an ambitious comprehensive plan for the development of marine infrastructure for the period 2024-2028. The main focus of the plan is to create a transport and logistics cluster based on the ports of Aktau and Kuryk. This project, aimed at strengthening the country's economic ties with international markets, involves a significant expansion of port capacities, the construction of a new container hub and the creation of multimodal logistics complexes.
One of the key projects will be the creation of a modern container hub in the port of Aktau. The new hub is expected to increase the port's capacity to 215,000 TEU (equivalent to a 20-foot container) per year, more than five times the current capacity. The move aims to turn Aktau into an important hub for container transportation in the region, supporting cargo transit between China, Europe and Central Asia.
The growing traffic along the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route also highlights the importance of Kazakhstan's seaports. In the first half of 2024, the volume of cargo transportation on this route increased by 65%, reaching 2.1 million tons. The Trans-Caspian route passes through China, Kazakhstan, the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan and Georgia, connecting the markets of Europe and Asia.
The main funding for port modernization projects will come from private investment, which underlines the interest of international business in infrastructure development in Kazakhstan. One of the major investors is the Singapore company PSA International, which will participate in the creation of a container hub in Aktau. This strategic cooperation is aimed at increasing the region's competitiveness in the global logistics market.
The creation of a sea transport and logistics cluster will significantly increase the competitiveness of Kazakhstan in the international arena. The development of Aktau and Kuryk ports will open up new opportunities for trade and increase the attractiveness of the country as a key transit hub for cargo traveling between East and West.
